奥拉朱旺1963年1月21日出生于尼日利亚拉各斯，在1984年选秀大会被休斯顿火箭队用状元签选中，职业生涯曾效力于休斯顿火箭队以及多伦多猛龙队。他一共12次入选NBA全明星阵容（1985-1990，1992-1997），6次入选NBA最佳阵容一阵，2次荣膺NBA年度最佳防守球员，5次入选NBA最佳防守阵容一阵，2次当选NBA篮板王，3次当选NBA盖帽王。
1993-94赛季，当赛季拿下NBA常规赛MVP的奥拉朱旺带领火箭夺得当季NBA总冠军，他也成为了NBA历史上首位在一个赛季同时荣膺常规赛MVP、年度最佳防守球员（DPOY）以及总决赛MVP（FMVP）的球员。火箭队则连续2年问鼎NBA总冠军（1994年和1995年）。
